MEDICINAL BENEFITS

Multiple parts 

  • Medicine is considered antihemorrhagic, aphrodisiac, emetic, emmenagogue, febrifuge, and laxative 

  • the plant is used in local medicine as pain relief, treating digestive problems such as constipation, and vomiting, and for internal bleeding 

Bark

  • Infusion of the bark is a treatment against paralysis, decoction against constipation 

  • Pulp is used as a diuretic and febrifuge

  • The maceration is used as a remedy for leprosy

  • Ashe if the bark is prepared with shea butter as soap used for treatment against lumbago

  • Decoction is prepared with food and treatment for backache 

Root

  • The roots are pulverised with millet-beer and used to treat hernias, in decoction with pimento against gonorrhoea and stomach ache

Leaves

  • Leaf decoction to treat oedema 

ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS

  • It largely reproduces itself from suckers and is recommended for reforestation purposes 

  • Leaves are rich in nitrogen they are used to enrich the soil

OTHER USES

  •  â€‹Young leaves contain large amounts of digestible crude protein, leaves are used as fodder for cattle and camels

  • The wood is used in West Africa for pulp

  • The bark is used in tanning

  • The seeds have an oil that is rich in oleic acid, which is used in West African cooking 

  • Bark scales are sometimes used as a fish poison
