MEDICINAL BENEFITS

Multiple parts 

  • Used as a febrifuge, tonic, and antiseptic

  • Asthma and other respiratory problems for treatment for arthritic inflammations

Bark

  • Treatment to aid childbirth

Root

  • Treat stiffness and tetanus

  • Crushed and mixed with oil and used as smallpox salve, skin diseases

  • Can also be made into a decoction

Leaves

  • Wilted or heated leaves are applied as a poultice to painful swelling, and wounds, or to relieve headaches

  • Crushed leaves applied to the face, used in mouth ulcers, swelling testicles

Fruit

  • Used as a diuretic, laxative, and emollient 

  • Pulp can be used to cleanse, hair, iron, and steel

  • Young fruit used to treat high blood pressure

ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS

  • The tree is used to support pepper plants

  • Intercropping with cereals and perennials, they provide shade to coffee plants 

  • The plant is a pioneer species in appearing in the cultivated ground after bushfires, deforestation, or volcanic activity

OTHER USES

  • Eaten raw or prepared leaves

  • Red dyed from the root bark, often used in batik making

  • Ripe fruit made into a beverage

  • Young leaves and blanched roots raw or steamed are added to curries
